Uncle Bob,
I do not like it but;
Is there anything we can do other than stock up with 100 watt light bulbs?

My extensive investigation of CFL's from their 1st platform, the counterfeit ones and the newer platforms offered by legit manufacturers leads me to believe that the newer ones are OK if used within their listings. The real question is their efficiency versus incandescent bulbs. If people/consumers use some of the bulbs beyond their listings (i.e. pendant, upright, dimmer approved and exterior moisture resistant) there can be issues with bulb life indicating pops, demarcation/scorching and smoke development) all normal signs of life ending due to the safety ballast measures. They can prove useful however on the flip side if used properly. I also researched the efficiency accounts versus incandescent and the savings are minimal over the ten year studies I've reviewed (circa 2000 to 2010). The basic key is the public should read the "fine print" on the packaging and use these bulbs within their listing for energy effectiveness potentials. I still use incandescent in my home but practice fire safety with regards to exposure to combustibles. The mercury disposal issue is beyond my span of control because I'm not the enviornmental police FMWB
